Choosing a rack
A power rack decides what the rest of your garage gym can be. Look at three numbers before the price: the upright size, the hole size and the rated load. Upright and hole size decide which J-hooks, spotter arms and attachments fit. The rated load tells you how much the frame is built to carry on its hooks and arms.
Full cages give you four posts and a safety arm on each side, which is the setup to choose if you squat and bench alone. Folding wall racks take a fraction of the floor, but they need a solid wall and fixings. A rack with a built-in lat pulldown saves you buying a cable station later. It is still a plate-loaded cable, though, and not a weight stack.
